IRB: Refunds in three months

By IZATUN SHARI

KUALA LUMPUR: Taxpayers who have overpaid their taxes will get their refunds one to three months from the re-filing date, beginning this year.

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin said those who used the e-filing system could get their refunds in one month because the information would enter the main system and would be processed immediately.

“For those who re-file their tax returns using the manual system, the information will be scanned first, which slows down the refund process,” he told reporters after launching the taxpayers month programme 2007 and e-payment system at KL Sentral here yesterday.

Awang Adek said the refund process would be shortened because the Inland Revenue Board would focus only on the amount of the current assessment year.

Previously, he said the process used to take years because before making a refund, the board would recalculate, taking into consideration payments for previous years, to ensure that there were no tax arrears.

On e-filing, he said hopefully the percentage of taxpayers using the system would increase to between 10% and 15% this year, compared with 5% of taxpayers last year.

He said 188,747 individual taxpayers and 301 corporate taxpayers used the e-filing system, which was introduced last year.

Asked whether the Government planned to make it compulsory for taxpayers to use e-filing, he said, “We will not make it compulsory. We will provide taxpayers with the alternative.”

On the newly launched e-payment using the Financial Process Exchange, Awang Adek said taxpayers could now make payments through CIMB Bank (BCB account only), Public Bank Bhd, Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd and Hong Leong Bank Bhd.

Taxpayers need to access www.hasil.org.my or http://e.hasil.org.my and click the e-payment icon to use the service.

The taxpayers' month will go on until June 30.
